What is Gum Disease?

Aside from tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease is the most common oral problem people experience.

Slow and progressive, periodontal disease is essentially a chronic inflammatory process that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, namely the gums and the jawbone. Periodontics can be localized, affecting only a few teeth, or it can involve complete dentition.

What are the first signs of the disease?

The first signs are red, swollen, and bleeding gums when brushing, as well as bad breath. The disease then progresses by destroying the bone around the teeth. Once lost, the bone does not regenerate, eventually leading to tooth loss.

What is gum recession?

When gum recession occurs, the root of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that cavities, tenderness, premature wear, and other problems can affect the tooth below and even under the gum line.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

Several factors play a role in the development and progression of this disease including poor dental hygiene, medications, diet, diabetes and general health.

What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique® technique?

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® is a minimally-invasive option for the treatment of gum recession. This technique does not require any incisions or stitches.

During surgery, a needle is used to make a small hole in the gum tissue. Special instruments are passed through this hole to detach the tissues and replace them to cover the exposed roots.

What are the benefits of the Chao Pinhole® technique?

Here are the advantages of this surgical technique:

  • Less discomfort for the patient
  • No need to take gum tissue on the palate
  • Faster recovery
  • No stitches
  • No scalpel incision
  • Long-term stable results
